Guardianships
There are times when a grandparent, step-parent or partner of a parent must have
the authority to make decisions for a minor child. In such cases, these people
can be named guardians for the child. A guardian can enroll a child in school,
seek medical care for a child, collect child support for a child, and sometimes,
cover a child under medical insurance.
The court appoints a guardian. The process is not complicated.
A person can be a guardian of a child even if the biological parent of the child
lives with the child.
Parents can also execute powers of attorney granting other people the right to
make decisions on behalf of a child. This is done without court intervention.
However, these powers of attorney are only valid for 12 months.
